The Santhal Rebellion of 1855-1856 was led by Siddhu and Khanhu against British rule in India. The Santhal people had traditionally cultivated the land in southern Bihar but were displaced when the lands passed to zamindars under the Permanent Settlement of 1793. They faced further difficulties and atrocities from indigo planters and railway officials.
