Nasal sounds are produced when air passes through the nose rather than the mouth. The soft palate is lowered to allow this, while the mouth remains closed. Bilabial, alveolar, and velar nasal sounds were provided as examples. Lateral sounds are produced when the center of the tongue makes complete closure against the roof of the mouth, forcing air to escape along the sides of the tongue. The alveolar lateral sound was given as an example.
