What is Update about?

## Countryside and Rights of Way Act 2000 Part I of this Act provides the public with a ri ht of access to certain land for the purposes o f recreation, subject to certain conditions. Part 11 makes provision regarding the designation, amendment, maintenance and restrictions upon the use of public ri hts of way. Part 111 amends the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 so as to significantly enhance the protection of SSSIs. Royal Assent was given on 30 November 2000. ## Freedom of Information Act 2000 This Act provides limited rights to access information held by public authorities. The system for accessing such information will be r e g u l a t e d by t h e D a t a P r o t e c t i o n Commissioner who will be renamed the Information Commissioner and the Data Protection Tribunal which will be renamed the Information Tribunal. Part VIII includes a power for the Secretary of State to make Regulations to implement the information provisions of the Aarhus Convention, and related matters. It is likely that these Regulations will incorporate amendments to EC provisions on environmental information, currently being ne otiated.
