What is Understanding Diodes and Their Types about?
The diode allows current to flow in one direction but not the other. When forward biased, current flows with a small, constant voltage drop of around 0.7V for silicon and 0.3V for germanium. When reverse biased, no current flows until breakdown voltage is exceeded. Zener diodes are designed to operate in reverse bias as voltage regulators. Specialty diodes include free-wheeling diodes for relay coils, light emitting diodes, and constant current diodes.
