The Norman invasion of Ireland began in 1169 when Cambro-Norman mercenaries led by Robert FitzStephen and Maurice de Prendergast landed in Ireland at the request of Diarmait Mac Murchada, the ousted King of Leinster, in order to help him regain his kingdom. Over the next two years, further Norman landings led by Richard de Clare, also known as Strongbow, resulted in the Normans assuming control of Leinster and the Norse-Irish cities of Dublin, Waterford, and Wexford.
