This study measured hormone levels in 6 patients before, during, and after thyroidectomy. In 4 patients who experienced a postoperative fall in calcium levels, calcitonin and parathyroid hormone levels did not change. In one patient where calcium fell and thyroid hormones rose after surgery, the calcitonin rise occurred later than the calcium fall.
