Since the Six-Day War of June 1967, Israelis have spent decades debating whether, when, and how their small state can concede some of the territory it occupied in the conflict, in exchange for peace with its Arab neighbors. Does territory provide security? Does Israel's attachment to certain territories actually endanger its long-term survival? These questions permeate Israel's public sphere to the extent that political understandings of "left" and "right" are less about social attitudes and class than in many other countries.
