What is Rizal about?

Rizal attended the University of Santo Tomas from 1879-1884 where he had early literary successes, winning contests with poems promoting Filipino youth and equality. However, he found the environment suffocating and hostile as a Filipino student, facing prejudice and poor teaching. His grades suffered as a result, though they had initially been excellent. Seeking a better education free from discrimination, Rizal decided to leave for further study in Europe in 1884.
