Rizal departed Manila for Hong Kong on February 3, 1888 aboard the ship Zafiro. Upon arriving in Hong Kong on February 8, he was accompanied by his brother-in-law and cousins. He enjoyed the Chinese festival and visited various sites around the city. On February 18, Rizal went to Macao, which he described as a small, gloomy city with many boats but few steamers. He stayed with Don Francisco Lecaros. Rizal then took a boat from Hong Kong to Japan, during which time he met O-Sei-San, one of his nine lovers. T
