The balitaw is a folk song from the Visayas region of the Philippines. It is traditionally sung in 3/4 time and was originally accompanied by a three-string coconut-shell guitar or harp. The balitaw takes the form of a debate or dialogue where a young woman and man compete in improvising romantic verses. These song exchanges were once used as a prelude to courtship but faded from tradition by the 1930s, although the songs are still performed today.
