The court system in the Philippines has evolved over different regimes. Under Spanish rule, courts were organized hierarchically at the national, provincial, and local levels. The American regime established the Supreme Court in 1901 and gave it ultimate appellate jurisdiction. The 1935 Constitution Filipinized the Supreme Court and increased its membership.
