Poxviruses are large DNA viruses that can infect both vertebrates and invertebrates. They have complex virion structures and replicate entirely within the cytoplasm of infected cells. Their replication involves early and late gene expression and results in the formation of actin comet tails that transport virions between cells. Though once a major human pathogen due to smallpox, poxviruses are now relatively unimportant pathogens in humans following the global eradication of smallpox in 1977.
