It may also play a role in pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), epididymitis, proctitis, infertility, adverse outcomes in pregnancy, and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) transmission. Three United States Food and Drug Administration approved nucleic acid amplification tests are available. Testing should be focused and intentional to avoid unnecessary antibiotic use. International guidelines for MG testing vary, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends testing for persistent male urethritis, cervicitis, and proctitis. Testing should be considered in cases of PID. Testing is also recommended for sexual contacts of patients with MG. Routine screening in asymptomatic individuals, including pregnant patients, is not recommended. There is increasing resistance to macrolides and fluoroquinolones.
