What is Session 13: Biomaterials in Dentistry about?

Although titanium remains to be the prevalent material in dental implant manufacturing, new zirconia-based ceramic composites that overcome the major drawbacks of both titanium (aesthetics, metal ion release, hypersensitivity/allergy) and standard yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (3Y-TZP) (low temperature degradation and fracture toughness) are starting to emerge. In this study, a new ceramic nanocomposite made of ceria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals and alumina (ZCe-A) has been evaluated both in vitro and in vivo. The in vitro tests were performed on different materials (ZCe-A and both of its monolithic components: alumina and 3Y-TZP) and surface topographies (polished and grit blasted); all of the tested materials and surface textures demonstrated to be biocompatible. Moreover, ZCe-A, in particular, proved to be the most favorable material for osseous differentiation in vitro as it induced the fastest and the most osteogenic gene expression. Following the in vitro assays, ZCe-A was used to produce dental implants with the mechanic and topographic characteristics of a pilot implant design to study bone and soft tissue integration in vivo. For this, t
