What is Le Portail de Saint-Trophime d'Arles - VA: Naissance et renaissance d'un chef-d'oeuvre roman about?
"Saint-Trophime's church is part of an episcopal complex built on the west side of Arles' hill du ring the Middle Ages. The huge construction of the roman cathedral began around the year 1100, and lasted until the end of the 12th century. The construction of the complex ended with the setting of a richly decorated portal on the western front. Famous for the quality and beauty of its sculptures, the portal rep-resents the Last Judgement. The balance of its arrangement, the friezes reminding of the Paleo-Christian sarcophagus, the great statues of Saints, framed with small columns and the polychrome of the marbles are of a rarely equaled originality in France. Damaged by the time tribulations, pollution of air and water ingresses, the portal attracted the attention of Arles' curators, who started a large-scale intervention. The heavy work ended in 1995, a regular but lighter maintenance has since taken on. The renovation allowed art historians to study exhaustively the amazing iconographie pattern of this splendid facade. This book is a new edition completely revised and extended of a book published in 1999"--Page 4 of cover
