What is It all Depends about?
is clearly a man of prodigious force of character and of immcnscly strong convictions. But, i n c e hc is also engagingly human, these seem sometimes to bc Icss than wholly consistent with each other, and it is probably safe to predict that there will not be a single reader who does not disagree with something in thr book. For example, Sir Robcrt is clearly a corripassionate man, full of genuine syrrlpathy for. rhe i~nmediate victims of crime, yet he states quite categorically his belief that "the worst [reviewer's italics] of a11 crirncs is the furtherance of' political or industrial aims by violence". XI:, reader taking up the book need fear that it will not hold him or her; after all, the inside stories of the Spaghetti House and the Balcombe Street sieges, and of the clcaning up of the Metropolitan Police, are alone a guarantee of intcrcst. Moreover, as the author writrs well and with a nice dry wit, it seerns likely that the book will need no commendation from this or any othcr reviewer to make it a best seller.
