What is Effective Use of Cutaways in Dialogue about?

Cutaways are used by editors to shorten time or connect two unrelated shots. In dialogue scenes, especially documentaries, reaction shots are inserted to skip unwanted dialogue and move the story forward. One example is cutting away from a couple on a couch to the mother and child, then back, to bridge their dialogue.
