Chronic exposure to high dietary magnesium in rats caused changes in thyroid morphology and function. Rats fed magnesium sulfate at doses of 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 g/100g diet for 60 days showed: 1) Increased thyroid peroxidase and Na+-K+-ATPase enzyme activities and altered iodothyronine 5/- deiodinase type I activity. 2) Increased serum T4, total T3, and TSH levels with decreased free T3 and T3/T4 ratio. 3) Enlargement of the thyroid gland and associated histopathological changes.
