Gestational trophoblastic disease (GTD) is an abnormal proliferation of placental cells that develops instead of a normal pregnancy. There are two types of GTD - complete and partial moles. Complete moles have a karyotype of 46XX or 46XY but the chromosomes come entirely from the father, while partial moles have 69 chromosomes from two sperm or an ovum and one sperm. Complete moles are more likely to develop into choriocarcinoma, a rapidly spreading cancer.
