Introduction to the special issue on wavelet-based algorithms for medical problems Nowadays, wavelets are one of the most important and interesting tools for time-frequency analysis of signals. Much literature has appeared recently describing wavelet-based algorithms in signal processing. Specially, the concept of joint time-frequency-shape analysis has broken boundaries since it was introduced in the literature by famous authors and by Guido, R.C. et al., in their paper published recently in an Elsevier journal, A new technique to construct a wavelet transform to match a specified signal with applications to digital real time spike and overlap pattern recognition. They created a matched wavelet-like transform that is able to find the time-support of frequencies and, at the same time, classify some patterns of spikes and overlaps from H1, a motion-sensitive neuron of the fly's visual system. Also, it is possible to find some other similar contributions in the literature. Particularly, the applications of wavelets for medical problems are also notable. We can mention algorithms for the classification of voice disorders, electrocardiogram (ECG) and electroencephalogram (EEG) analysis
