Robert F. Allen successfully treads a challenging tightrope of enlightening literary criticism over complex, but logically organized statistical and procedural information. His subject is Benjamin Constant's Adolphe (1816), one of the best early examples of the French Romantic personal novel, and his approach and manner are clear and helpful. The chapter on the stylo-statistical analysis of Adolphe, though but twenty-five pages long, is convincing. The book as a whole contains a wealth of strategic information on constructing the database and writing the programs for appropriate querying. Those of us who have devoted much time to the creation of a database and to the programming necessary to implement the literary strategies that impelled or inspired us to such labor will undoubtedly identify with Allen as he describes the twelve to seventeen years of effort he invested (Preface, i). The book's structure reflects his concerns: seven chapters plus a bibliography, index, and over three dozen tables. The first two of seven principal sections deal with the "birth" of his programs, including strategies for sorting data, defining lexemes, lemmas, words, and keywords,
