This thesis examines optimal airfoil design using 3D computations. The author studies the effects of span and mesh resolution on 3D flows. An optimal 2D airfoil shape is used as the initial geometry for 3D shape optimization. Gradient-based continuous adjoint methods are applied to maximize lift of the airfoil in 3D unsteady flows.
