What is Understanding LGBT: History and Meaning about?

LGBT is an initialism that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender. It was created in the 1990s to be more inclusive than the term "gay community". The term is now commonly used in the US and other English-speaking countries to refer to sexuality and gender identity-based communities. Variants like LGBTQ add the letter Q for those who identify as queer or questioning. The initialism is intended to emphasize diversity in sexuality and gender identities.
