Rizal wrote several essays predicting Philippine independence and criticizing Spanish colonial rule. In "The Philippines: A Century Hence," he discussed how Spanish policies decreased the population through violence and imposed poverty. Indigenous culture deteriorated due to colonial destruction and suppression of local identity. Rizal wanted to revive Philippine culture and end colonial ignorance. He foresaw Filipinos overcoming fear of colonizers, which has now become reality.
