This book frames a theoretical problem and potential response directed toward, and with a concern for, communities that identify as Christian and refl ect on historical situations in light of a Christian faith commitment. It asks whether the theology of Christian communities is useful, relevant, and can operate in an authentic way in the present context of global coloniality. Taking seriously the traditions that make up liberation theology, which claim that Christian theology must be responsible to those who experience social, political, and economic structures as structures of domination, and ultimately must work against oppression, it suggests an option for a positive response. When Frantz Fanon and James Baldwin were writing, they wrote within particular struggles. Fanon's writing was a part of his political praxis within a nationalist struggle that "authorized" this struggle, clarifi ed its objectives, and convinced readers to push the struggle forward. Baldwin wrote to reveal realities underneath social myths, clarify ways in which the interior lives of individuals and communities are deeply political, and search for a unity that bound the everyday struggle of existence.
