This document provides a formula and example for calculating a safe speed (Vs) for vessels to avoid collision based on their distance to an oncoming vessel (DZR), initial speed (Vo), and distance at closest point of approach (So). The safe speed is calculated such that the head track reach (Sv) of each vessel is less than half the distance to the oncoming vessel minus a 10% margin from the radar range.
