Pope Benedict XVI was born Joseph Aloisius Ratzinger in Marktl, Germany in 1927. He entered seminary school at age 12 and his early life was shaped by the rise of Nazism in Germany, though his family opposed the Nazi party due to their Catholic faith. In 1941, at age 14, Ratzinger was conscripted into the Hitler Youth as required by German law at the time.
