What is Rational Choice Theory in Student Preferences about?

The professor conducted an experiment in a college class of 100 students where 50 students preferred candy bars and 50 preferred ball-point pens. The professor randomly distributed 50 candy bars and 50 pens to the students. Some received their preferred item while others did not. According to rational choice theory, we would expect the students who did not receive their preferred item to trade with each other so that in the end everyone receives their preferred item.
