Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) measures the amount of oxygen used by bacteria to break down organic matter. A 5-day BOD (BOD5) test is commonly used, incubating the sample at 20°C for 5 days. BOD5 is used to design biological wastewater treatment systems and as an effluent limit. Nitrifying bacteria can also consume oxygen through the breakdown of ammonia to nitrate.
