MIT researchers are developing a 1 cm diameter, 3 mm thick silicon carbide micro gas turbine generator capable of producing 10-20 watts of power from hydrogen fuel or up to 100 watts from hydrocarbons. The combustor has been tested and an 80 watt micro-turbine has been fabricated using deep reactive ion etching of silicon. This would be the first power MEMS device, operating at power densities similar to large scale gas turbines but at a sub-centimeter scale using microfabrication techniques.
