Development of a Submicron Optochemical Potassium Sensor with Enhanced Stability Due to Internal Reference by Ilona Koronczi; Johannes Reichert; Gerhard Heinzmann; Hans J. Ache is a Engineering article available to read on EtoBox.
What is Development of a Submicron Optochemical Potassium Sensor with Enhanced Stability Due to Internal Reference about?
A submicron optochemical potassium sensor was developed by coating an aluminium-coated SNOM fiber with 50 nm aperture with a plasticized polymeric membrane containing the ionophore valinomycin for potassium complexation and a fluoresceinderivative for optical transduction. In order to enhance the signal reproducibility an internal reference was introduced by incorporating nile red as a second fluorescent dye into the membrane. The emission peak of the reference dye is not affected by changes of analyte concentrations. Due to referencing the sensor signal stability in view of photobleaching was improved by a factor of 100 compared to absolute fluorescence intensity measurements. Furthermore, by varying the membrane composition the response time and measuring range of the sensor were optimized for measurements in physiological fluids.
