Helen Frankenthaler was an abstract painter and a leading figure of the Color Field painting movement in the 1950s. With her 1952 painting "Mountains and Sea", she introduced a new technique called the "soak-stain process" where she thinned paint with turpentine and poured it onto an unprimed canvas on the floor to soak through, creating organic fields of color.
