What is Storiform Neurofibromas of the Skin, Pigmented and Nonpigmented about?

N the examination of skin biopsies, tumors I that have a peculiar microscopic structure similar to matting are okten seen. T h e term "storiform" (storia=matting) has been adopted by the authors in describing such tumors. Stout compared the microscopic appearance of these tumors to a spiral nebula in 1948, and later, to a pinwheel.12 They are not genetically uniform. Most of them come within the category of histiocytoma or dermatofibroma and their variants, the actual tumorous character of which is doubtful. T h e latter tumors have been variously described as sclerosing hemangioma,5 xanthofibroma,lB xanthogranuloma,lO, 11 histioc ytoma,gs 17 neuroxanthoma,\*s 3 etc. A knowledge of this benign condition of the skin is important, because on histological examination these tumors can easily be mistaken for fibrosarcomas. T h e fact that they are not circumscribed at the periphery may give the impression ol a destructive growth. This diagnostic error can be excluded by the histochemical demonstration of sudanophilic lipids and hemosiderin, which are hardly ever absent. Definite evidence of malignancy is, of course, not present. Quite different is the case with storiform tumors of the s
