Hirakud Dam, located on the Mahanadi River in Sambalpur, Odisha, is the longest dam in the world at 4801 meters and was completed in 1953, inaugurated in 1957. Its primary purposes are flood control and irrigation for thousands of square kilometers of crops, while also generating hydroelectricity to support regional industrialization. The project cost ₹1,000 million and aims to manage river movement to prevent disasters in the Mahanadi delta.
