What is Regeneration and multiplication of shoot in Albizia falcataria about?

In the last decade, there have been a number of reports on in vitro plant regeneration and micropropagation of certain woody trees in the family Leguminosae (Ravishankar & Jagadishchandra 1989;. The potential application of this in vitro technique for genetic improvement and propagation of nonconventional woody trees of various economic uses has recently been realised . Albizia falcataria (L.). Forberg is one of the quickest growing leguminous trees and offers enormous economic potential as a source of pulpwood . It is also used as shade tree on tea and coffee plantations (Dassanayake & Fosberg 1980) and can also be utilised for biomass production in social forestry programmes. Tissue culture studies on Albizia have been reported previously by several workers (Gharyat & Maheshwar 1983; Tomar & Gupta 1988a. However, there have been no reports on in vitro regeneration and multiplication of shoots in A. falcataria. The present communication reports on successful in vitro regeneration and multiplication of A. falcataria through organogenesis from juvenile cotyledon explant cultures. Seeds of A. falcataria were procured from the Forest Research Institute, Dehra Dun, India and soaked ove
