The study investigates the relationship between contrast sensitivity (CS) and early ocular changes in children and young adults with Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus (T1DM). It finds that alterations in CS can precede typical changes in the macular area, with significant decreases in CS observed as T1DM duration increases. The results suggest that CS testing may serve as an early detection method for diabetic preretinopathy and nonproliferative diabetic retinopathy, even in patients with normal visual acuity.
