Calcium homeostasis involves the regulation of calcium levels in the blood and bones through a feedback loop. Around 1000g of calcium is stored in bones. When calcium levels in the blood drop, parathyroid hormone (PTH) is released to stimulate bone resorption and calcium absorption in the intestines. When calcium levels rise, calcitonin is released to inhibit bone resorption and promote calcium deposition in bones. Vitamin D helps absorb calcium from the diet and stimulates bone resorption.
