What is Vision in the Animal World about?
## WHAT IS VISION? In days gone by the eye was regarded as 'the gateway to the brain'! As soon as life developed throughout the world and animals were compelled to move from place to place, eyes became an essential part of their anatomy. They were necessary not only for the purpose of finding food but also to provide warning of attack. In our own lives the possession of vision gives us essential information concerning the relationship between our bodies and surrounding objects. It enables us to pass between them, or over them, or around them, as the case may be. We can determine by using our eyes, whether the objects we perceive are close to us or far away, and whether they are stationary or moving. Movement is detectable when the distance between any two objects varies continuously, or intermittently. Gradually, as the result of experience, we learn the types of object which may prove dangerous and how soon to move away from their vicinity. We decide, by our sense of touch, whether the objects are solid, hard or soft, dry or wet after we have verified their presence and made up our minds whether it is safe to approach them.
