What is Sacred Significance of Guinea Fowl about?

The guinea fowl was originally an ugly bird that lived alone in the forest. One day it helped a sick old man by giving him food and company, and the old man turned out to be the god Obatalá. Obatalá was impressed by the kindness of the fowl and painted it white, making it the most sacred bird in the Yoruba religion. Oshun then established the guinea fowl as a permanent symbol in the rituals honoring the orishas.
