He argues that, far from this community having lost its distinctive identity, it retains a pronounced sense of its own integrity in the modern world. He shows that, despite significant lines of social differentiation and revealing conflicts, this continuing sense of integrity is translated into particular forms of collective expression, ranging from occasional acts of considerable generosity through to the symbolically charged annual concert.</p>
