## Abstract Based on modern concepts of ionic polymerization, a system of kinetic models which covers various initiation and propagation mechanisms, all based on a pseudo‐steady‐state assumption, is proposed. Special attention is given to the effect of solvent on the rate‐controlling steps. Equations for reaction rate, degree of polymerization, and molecular weight distribution for 12 fundamental models are derived and fully discussed. The theory is also extended to more complicated systems such as the ion pair, free‐ion system.
