What is Eukaryotes without oxygen? A review of “Mitochondria and anaerobic energy metabolism in eukaryotes” by William F. Martin, Aloysius G. M. Tielens and Marek Mentel about?

The authors themselves make the strongest argument for the crucial role that O 2 played during eukaryogenesis, in my opinion. On the last page they state that it ". . . is a dangerous terminal acceptor". But that did not mean the LECA avoided it. Instead it had learned to live with it, because the benefits outweighed the costs. Its enormous increase in cellular complexity reflects the prize it had to pay.
