An eclipse occurs when one heavenly body casts its shadow on another. There are two types of eclipses - lunar and solar. A lunar eclipse happens when the Earth moves between the Sun and the Moon, casting its shadow on the Moon. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, casting its shadow on parts of the Earth. Both eclipses can be total, partial, or annular depending on how much of the Sun or Moon is obscured by the shadow.
