John Newton wrote the Christian hymn "Amazing Grace" in 1779 based on his own life experiences. Newton grew up without religion but was pressured into naval service and later worked in the slave trade. After surviving a violent storm at sea in 1748, he underwent a spiritual conversion and called out to God for mercy, marking a turning point in his life. He later left seafaring and began studying theology after ending his involvement in the slave trade between 1754 and 1755.
