Rheumatic Heart Disease is caused by Group A Streptococcal bacteria, where 30-50% of patients will develop valvular heart disease within 2-20 years after an initial attack of rheumatic fever. Symptoms of valvular heart disease include exertional dyspnea, palpitations, fatigue, and arrhythmias. Prophylactic therapy is recommended to prevent future rheumatic fever attacks.
