Aleksei Antonov was a high-ranking Soviet military officer who served as Chief of the General Staff of the Red Army during World War II. Born in 1896 in what is now Belarus, he studied mathematics and science at university before serving in World War I and the Russian Civil War. He rose through the ranks in the interwar period, becoming Chief of Staff of several military districts. In 1941, he helped establish the Southern Front and was appointed its Chief of Staff.
