Each of the five volumes of this encyclopedia covers a chronological era, with prehistory in v.1 and independent Africa (1960-present) in v.5. In this way, readers can find entries on the Central African Republic, for example, in all five volumes; and the entries on food in each volume vary according to the era. The text is accessible to high school students and general readers. Each entry includes cross- references, some also include recommended reading; a glossary and list of references are included with each volume. There are some illustrations, in b&w, and each volume begins with an introduction to the era featured, a group of maps, and a time line.
