What is Praetorian Guard: 1 History about?
The Praetorian Guard was a force of bodyguards used by Roman Emperors from 31 BC to the 4th century AD. They were originally recruited by Augustus to protect him in Rome but later became involved in imperial politics, sometimes determining who would become emperor. Over time their power grew but they were eventually replaced under Diocletian and their fortress in Rome housed only a minor garrison by 305 AD.
