It baffles me that NHS England want to bring consultants out of their well earned retirement 1 instead of improving retention to tackle the care backlog resulting from the covid pandemic.Yes, it's important for consultants' pension tax to be sorted, but nobody is going to look back on their deathbed and wish they'd worked for longer. In the meantime, the foundation programme didn't have the foresight to create enough jobs for this year's graduating medical students, juniors are struggling to get a training post, and the workforce is angry about pay erosion and poor working conditions. If they need more doctors, they need to make the job worth the blood, sweat, and tears that we pour into it.
