What is Mt Tarawera Eruption of 1886 about?
The Mt Tarawera volcano in New Zealand erupted in the early hours of June 10th 1886, destroying the nearby pink and white silica terraces. Hot mud, rocks, and ash were shot from the erupting volcano, burying two Maori villages. A bed of Lake Rotomahana was destroyed, covering the area in debris. The eruption was heard as far away as the South Island and earthquakes were felt throughout the North Island. Located near where tectonic plates meet, the volcano was under pressure before erupting.
